He felt for the first time the dull and angry helplessness which is the first warning stroke of the triumph of mutability. - D.L. Sayers

Shannon Mercer sings Bach arias

A very nice collection of Bach chorales on the organ, soprano arias with obbligato violin and oboe.

Analecta, a Canadian company, has produced this collection of chorales and arias, some chorales for organ alone, arias with either oboe or violin obbligato and organ as basso continuo. The pieces are in the order of the dates of the church calendar.

One note, I find the final selection, BWV 57.7, a rather odd choice since it ends on an interrogative note by the soprano (the soul), rather than providing a good solid tonic resolution. The answer to the question lies in the chorale BWV 57.8, but that does not appear on this recording. This gives a sense of an unfinished aspect to the CD. However it did get my attention at the end, having to figure out what was happening.
