BWV 174.1
Not a chorale, but so wonderful
This sinfonia from Cantata 174 is an arrangement Bach made of the first movement of the third Brandenburg. He included horns and they are so perfect for the music, I will always miss them in the concerto version.
This recording of the sinfonia is light and lively in character and I like it very much.
This was a new discovery for me, I did not know Bach had used this music in both a concerto and a cantata. The cantata was played June 6, 1729; the concerto was presented to the Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg as part of a job application in March of 1721.
I am so happy that he added the horns and recycled the music into the cantata.
A short excerpt, CD 1, Track 16.
