In this very freedom from illusion he recognized the loss of something. From now on, every hour of lightheartedness would be, not a prerogative but an achievement. - D.L. Sayers

Bolinas Lagoon 1997

Sunset on the lagoon at one end of Point Reyes, separated from the mainland by the San Andreas fault.

Bolinas Lagoon

Because there are many habitats in a very small space, Point Reyes is a prime birding spot. In the winter, the peak of birding, you can go there and hear many languages in a day. People come from all over the world. Here are some websites with more information.

Catcher?

I took the Quiz at the Blue Pyramid. Here is the amazing result. This was one of my favorite books when I was in my twenties, and Franny and Zooey and Raise High the Roofbeams, Carpenters are still on my list of very good books to re-read.

You're The Catcher in the Rye!
by J.D. Salinger
You are surrounded by phonies, and boy are you sick of them! In an ongoing struggle to search for a land without phonies, you end up running away from everything, from school to consequences. In this process, you reveal that many people in your life have suffered torments and all you really want to do is catch them as they fall. Perhaps using a baseball mitt. Your biggest fans are infamous psychotics.

Take the Book Quiz at the Blue Pyramid.

Dorothy Sayers

As my Wimsey takes me.

Here are all the books Dorothy Sayers wrote with the characters Lord Peter and Harriet Vane. Harriet does not appear in two of them, but she is referred to marginally. These are great books to read and re-read; she is certainly a favorite of mine.

Vacation

A short trip to San Luis Obispo County to visit my daughter's family.

This month I took a short trip through the Salinas valley which lies between the Bay area and San Luis Obispo. The valley is planted mostly with lettuce and grapevines.

While I was there we visited the Las Pilitas Nursery near Santa Margarita. I found a Navaho Blue Oak and two sticky monkey flowers, the Diplacus (Mimulus) rutilus and the Diplacus (Mimulus) puniceus.

This is my baby Navaho Blue Oak.

I spent some time with my granddaughter and am so impressed with how her parents are managing.

We went for a short walk to the nearby beach, where there were Cliff Swallows nesting. You can just see the heads of the chicks in the nest opening.

The Morro Bay area is famous for peaks and rock formations.

On the beach there are evidences of the motion of the coastal hills.

The coastal scrub is at its peak of May color.
